The Planetary System

Your characters operate out of a planet called Ortlimar IV. It's in the Ortlimar system, which is located about 1/3 of the distance from the Outer Rim to the Core, and is therefore in a kind of vacuum, geography wise. Most people think of the two sections of the galaxy as being The Core and The Outer Rim. There are actually many systems in between, which don't have a clever Capitalized name.

In any case, Ortlimar IV is (predictably enough) the fourth planet of the system, which contains 11 planets total and has a single star. It is easily habitable by humans, with a cold-moderate environment and a breathable oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere. Gravity is a bit heavier than standard, about 1.15 G. Not enough to actually impact anyone who's used to standard gravity.

Ortlimar IV has 5 moons circling it, with the largest, Neela, used as a mining base and shipping port. Large spaceships offload cargo there, which is then hauled to the planet by a system of efficient shuttlecraft. The other moons are minor, and are left alone for the most part.

The other 10 planets in the system are mostly gas giants, with a few barren rocky planets scattered throughout. The seventh planet, Ortlimar VII (tricky surprise name!), has high concentrations of suspended carbon-4, used in the fuelling of fusion engines, and there is a scoop-mining operation there, to recover the valuable and relatively rare element.
