Who we are -- The Geektalk Team

Cyrus Durgin

Cyrus Durgin (cider@speakeasy.org) was born and raised in Boston, MA. After moving to the west coast three years ago, he began attending the Evergreen State College in 1994. His interest in computers began in 1982 when he was lucky enough to have access to an Apple II+ at home. After pursuing degrees in broadcast communications, sound engineering and English literature, he realized that computer science is where it's at. Currently Cyrus is working on projects related to internet security and firewalls, in addition to working part-time on a laser-based networking project. He also is a active proponent of freely-available software and is an advocate of Linux, a freely-available Unix-like operating system. In addition to co-hosting Geektalk, Cyrus is also one of the co-coordinators of the Linux and Unix User's Group, a student group at Evergreen. After graduating in June Cyrus plans to work at a high-tech networking firm in Seattle.

Ian Johnston

Picture o' Ian

Ian has been interested in computers since the age of 11, when he got his first TRS-80 Color Computer. At the time, he learned to program in BASIC, teaching himself with the reference books that came with the computer. Over the intervening years, he has become familiar with many different technologies, including remote-controlled airplanes, amateur radio, a brief flirtation with physics and chemistry, and now, the latest generation of computers. He currently runs the Linux operating system exclusively, but knows enough about Windows, MacOS and DOS to sound intelligent without actually knowing anything. Ian is the proud owner of 6 different computers, including a palmtop and a Tandy model 102 laptop.

Dudley, our dull-witted assistant

No one knows much about Dudley. He first came to our attention in late 1996, when he stumbled into the studio looking for his lost teddy bear. Feeling a great deal of sympathy for him, we cleared out the wood shed, and set him up with a nice cot and blanket, and he's been there ever since. He seems pretty useful around the show, since he can run tapes, sweep, and wax lyrical on the disillusionment of living with a learning disability. He won't talk about his past and doesn't seem to comprehend his future, so I guess he'll be on the Geektalk team for some time to come. When pressed for a picture, all he could come up with was this.
